The vehicle can be controlled by any interface available in the market, thus extending widely the possibility of autonomous control by severely disabled children that are often depending on those interfaces to control their assistive devices. Several levels of autonomy (of the vehicle and/or of the user) are available and can be pre-programmed by a technician, allowing the use of this technology by a significant number of children with severe motor, sensory or cognitive disabilities.
PALMIBER is a research and development project lead by ANDITEC, a Portuguese company specialized in Assistive Technology, financially supported at a national level by the Portuguese Program POS_Conhecimento, and internationally by the IBEROEKA Program, with national (CENTIMFE) and International (IAI/CSIC and NEURONIC) partners.
A series of pre-industrialized vehicles were produced to be tested in several pediatric rehabilitation centers of Portugal, Spain and countries in South America that contributed to the outcomes of the project. A larger production of the finished product will follow, making this novel equipment available in the international market.
